Bruno Gironcoli 1936 Villach-2010 Wien

1951-1956 apprenticeship as goldsmith in Innsbruck, 1957-1959 and 1961/62 studies of painting at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna under Eduard Bäumer. 1961/62 stay in Paris. 1977 Successor to Fritz Wotruba as head of the master school for sculpture at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. From 1961 work on objects made of various materials (wood, nylon, iron, pitch etc.), from 1964 use of polyester (...). Objects from the 1960s (assemblages, wire sculptures, representations of heads) set a new accent in Austrian sculpture, with comparable experiments found rather in the contemporary architectural scene. Since the late 1960s the beginning of monumental spatial installations, which in the 1990s condensed into assemblage-like, gigantic sculptures. Thematic focus: violence, torture, oppression and sexuality (...). Extensive oeuvre of drawings (...), which are partly substitutes for unrealisable ideas, partly preparations for sculptures.
