The Oeuvre of Austrian artist Christian Rothwangl consists primarily of drawings and paintings. Born in 1993 in Bruck an der Mur, Rothwangl studied from 2013 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Gunther Damisch and Christian Schwarzwald. Already during his studies, which he completed in 2020, the artist celebrated his first successes and participated in a variety of exhibitions. In 2017 Rothwangl also spent a study visit at the UCL Slade School of Fine Art in London, and two years later he received a scholarship from the HfBK Hamburg. The artist usually begins his painting process with a large number of studies, which he makes in short drawing sessions and which are almost always in DIN A4 format. These sketches, whose content is often influenced by personal impressions or photographic as well as art historical models, are usually already highly abstracted. In his process Rothwangl often re-sorts the studies, arranges them in groups and finally puts them on canvas using acrylic paint or ink. In some cases, sketches from different series of works are linked together, or several sketches are placed directly next to each other on the canvas, creating paintings in storybook format. Rothwangl's more recent paintings are primarily expressive in color, while representational content often oscillates between abstraction and figuration as well as between ornamentation and clear lines. Numerous participations in group exhibitions in Vienna, Hamburg and Munich, including at the Vienna Belvedere21, were followed by his first solo exhibition at the Vienna Art Foundation in 2021. Rothwangl was also part of the group exhibition satellite II at Hochhaus Herrengasse at Galerie Martin Janda and the exhibition Stable Friends at Never at Home, Vienna. This year followed participation in the exhibition when painting kicks at Suppan Gallery and an artist residency at Krinzinger Gallery in Petõmihályfa, Hungary. Rothwangl lives and works in Vienna.
